If the rise of Pinterest is any indication, Generation Y (us millennials born in the early 1980s and after) are becoming Generation DIY. And it’s no wonder: sometimes doing things yourself is way more fun than getting it ready made. It’s like a mini adventure, and usually learn something along the way (even if what you learn is that expectations rarely meets reality when it comes to some Pinterest projects…)

There are a lot of reasons to take a childbirth education course: regardless of what kind of birth you’re planning, it’s helpful to know your options and what’s going on in your body during the various stages of birth. That said, getting to a childbirth education course isn’t always the most convenient thing. Typically they require weeks of availability and childcare for your older children. They may require a long drive across town. Sometimes your money is just tied up in other necessities as you prepare for the birth of your baby. And while Louisville Area Doulas offers a unique childbirth education option in Kentuckiana that is only one day long and can even come to you, sometimes you just want to do it yourself.

Don’t worry. We got you covered.

Along with our group and private childbirth education models, Louisville Area Doulas also offers one hour birth planning consultations based on the same Your Birth Experience model as our classes. This option is perfect for those that have already taken a childbirth education class during a previous pregnancies, those that can’t afford a doula but what some expert guidance, or those that just prefer to self-study and DIY their childbirth preparation.

On the day of your birth planning session, your instructor will come to you at your home in Louisville, Southern Indiana, and the surrounding area or another location of your choice. She’ll bring your “Your Birth Experience Parent Guide” with her, which is yours to keep and go through afterward. This is the same guide that our YBE students receive and use in our childbirth education classes.

While she’s with you, she’ll talk through the guide with, lead you through an exercise that will help you envision your ideal birth experience, and walk you through how to use the guide to plan and get to that ideal birth experience. Then, it’s go time! Your instructor will lay out your assignments that will help you get the most out of the guide. In your reading, you’ll learn about the birth process and your options, how to prepare for your birth, and how to construct a truly amazing birth plan that represents your choices in for you birth experience.

But you won’t be on your own.

A week or so after your consultation, your instructor will follow up with you over the phone and answer any remaining questions that you may have. Even after that, she’s available over the phone or through email to help you out.

Still not “DIY” enough? You can also purchase the “Your Birth Experience Parent Guide” from us without a consultation. While you won’t get the expert guidance and follow up, you will get an invaluable resource for your birth experience at your fingertips.

So there you have it. Another awesome DIY project to add to your pregnancy queue. But this time, we guarantee it won’t be a “pinterest fail” and will help you feel in control, excited, and well informed for the best day of your life.
